Revenant (Book Seven of Indigo)
Published in Paperback by Tor Books (September, 1993)
Authors: Louise Cooper and Copyright Paperback Collection
Average review score:

A fun read
In Revenent the sixth demon Indigo faces is the most abstract she has faced up until this point. This makes the palpable evil that pervaded the previous books nearly nonexistent in this, despite the haunting cover art, and the grim title. This is still a wonderful book, and quite original. She creates an atmosphere of a society so driven to efficiency and the procuring of wealth, that even their language has been effected. Their society is tightly regimented, and politeness is used only as far as it serves their own ulterior motives. What I found to be one of the most interesting facets, was her ability to make fun and singing and dancing seem to be evil. I have seen other authors attempt this kind of situation. It probably has not been done as well since Aldus Huxley in "A Brave New World". Louise Cooper again shows her tremedous ablilty to get you involved in the story. Sadly some of the plot twists I did see coming, but "Revenant" is still a great book. Sadly, this is one of the more difficult to find of the Indigo Saga, but it is well worth the effort.

Excellent review of orthopaedic sports medicine
Excellent reference. Along the lines of, but just not as good as, Miller's classic Review of Orthopaedics.

Rhythmic Structure of Music
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (April, 1963)
Authors: Grosvenor Cooper and Leonard B. Meyer
Average review score:

Worthy Effort
Here Cooper and Meyer take on the nature of rhythm in music, using a system of relationships between accents and unaccented or lesser accented notes based on poetic feet. It is one of the very few attempts to discuss rhythm (beyond a basic categorization such as simple/compound; duple/triple)--that it is not, perhaps, completely successful should not entirely invalidate the effort, or indeed, the achievement. Certain topics are not entirely well-explained. I remember that as a student I asked Professor Meyer the difference between two particular terms used in the book--his answer was that he could no longer remember (this was probably 15 years after the book was written) and that the distinction no longer seemed important to him. True, the book was jointly authored and perhaps this distinction was never fully convincing to Meyer--I don't know. In spite of this, the book is truly important for introducing and discussing the concept of form as a rhythmic idea. That rhythm, like pitch, can have hierarchic structures may at first seem counterintuitive; but Cooper and Meyer make a convincing arguement. And that after some 35 years this book is still in print and has not been superceded speaks volumes.

Sea Horse in the Sky: A Science Fiction Novel
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group (January, 1970)
Author: Edmund Cooper
Average review score:

Sea-Horse in the Sky - Readable fantasy/sci-fi
After having read a number of Edmund Cooper's other books (namely Kronk and Prisoner of Fire), I had very high hopes for this book. I was intrigued as to what Mr Cooper could add to the fantasy genre to compare with his efforts in the field of sci-fi. The mystery present in so many of his novels is present at the beginning, but this is surpassed by the vision and stylish splendour of the, rather unexpected, ending. While I did not enjoy this book to the extent to which I had the others, this is still a wonderful read.

The sexual perspective : homosexuality and art in the last 100 years in the West
Published in Unknown Binding by Routledge & Kegan Paul ()
Author: Emmanuel Cooper
Average review score:

As far as text books go...!
If you're ever going to buy a book just for the pictures, look no further. Not only does "The Sexual Perspective" provide an open and thorough history of homoerotic art of the last few centuries, but it continues to fascinate the reader with alternative views of conventional and popular art. As for the pictures, it's certainly not porn, but I'd advise you to keep it on the top shelf of the bookcase. This is not for grade-school eyes. As far as textbook-style reads go, it's definitely a keeper.

Sour Grapes
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (August, 1998)
Author: Natasha Cooper
Average review score:

Good mystery book in a good series
Postgraduate criminology major Emma Gnatche is writing a thesis on the use of lie detecting devices in solving crimes. In her research, Emma comes across the strange case of accountant Andrew Lutterworth, a man serving four years for a fatal hit and run in which he changes his plea three times, with the last one being that he is innocent. Emma is curious as to when did he lie?

Emma's friend, Willow King is married to a police superintendent. Using that connection, Willow and Emma manages to hook Andrew up to a lie detector where it become obvious that the man is hiding something, but does not necessarily mean he ran over the mother and baby. The pair begins to dig deeper into the case and follow-up with questioning Andrew again when he is hooked up to a lie detector. Will they ultimately unravel the convict's secret that he is hiding from them and is that associated with the hit and run deaths that convicted him?

SOUR GRAPES is a wonderful English ! cozy that represents the best that the sub-genre offers. The two amateur sleuths are delightfully English in their pursuit of the truth. Their growing friendship provides a rarely seen female buddy team that is pleasant to read about in a fabulous tale. The stupendous story line is built around the intricacies of deceit and the ever growing web of lies to hide it, makes the novel into a chilling mystery. With her Willow King who-done-its (see ROTTON APPLES and POISON FLOWERS, etc.), Natasha Cooper may be the reigning queen of the English cozy mystery.
